Fasting Electrolytes: When to Take Them for Better Results

Fasting Electrolytes: When to Take Them for Better Results

Getting the right daily dosage of fasting electrolytes is crucial. But timing matters just as much.

If you wait until symptoms like headaches, fatigue or dizziness show up, you are already behind. Your electrolyte levels are already low and you are trying to catch up.

If you take them too early or too much at once, you may overshoot what your body needs and risk digestive discomfort.

The goal is simple. Keep your electrolyte levels stable throughout the day.

If you are not sure about your dosage, start with our Dosage Calculator and then apply the timing principles below

Extended Fasting (EF)

The key principle with Extended Fasting electrolytes is to spread your intake evenly throughout the day.

The most optimal method is to mix electrolyte powder with your drinking water and just sip gradually throughout the day. This keeps your levels stable and avoids drops and spikes. Unfortunately, this means the salty taste stays with you all day.

If that sounds like too much, then split your daily dosage into 3 or 4 portions and take them every 3-4 hours. This is also the best approach if you are using capsules rather than powder.

Always take your first portion of electrolytes as soon as you wake up to replenish your levels after the night’s sleep.

Please don’t forget that your required dosage is often lower on Days 1-2 of your fast, while you still have some electrolytes stored in your body. However, this varies and some people start losing sodium quickly, so always adjust based on how you feel.

Use our Dosage Calculator to see the optimal stacking of dosages from Day 1 onwards.

Intermittent Fasting (IF): 16:8 and 5:2

For Intermittent Fasting, you want to separate your electrolytes from your meal times as much as possible.

Electrolytes can be taken with or without food. However, during fasting, it usually makes more sense to take them during your fasting window rather than together with meals.

You will be absorbing some electrolytes from food, so adding more on top at the same time may increase the chance of overshooting your needs or causing digestive discomfort.

Instead, take your electrolytes during your fasting window, ideally in the middle.

Leave a gap of at least several hours before and after food. It will then be safe to take all of your dosage at once, since it’s likely to be fairly low on IF.

OMAD / ADF

The same general principle applies to OMAD / ADF. Do not take your electrolytes together with food. Leave a gap of a few hours before and after.

However, your fasting window is longer compared to protocols like 18:6 and your dosage requirements may be higher. It is therefore safer to split the dosage into 2 or 3 takes, and spread them out evenly throughout your fasting window.

Taking a smaller amount several times means more stable levels of energy and less chance of digestive upset or deficiency symptoms striking.

Longer fasts usually require more careful dosing.

Islamic Fasting

Islamic Fasting is a special case. The optimal timing is determined by the religious rules rather than your personal comfort or convenience.

As you cannot take any water or supplements during the fasting period, electrolytes need to be taken outside of fasting hours.

Here’s what we learned from our Muslim customers on how they take their Fasting Salts.

With or before Suhoor meal: most people take their electrolytes with or just before Suhoor meal. It’s crucial to drink plenty of water at the same time. If you don’t drink enough, electrolytes might make you even more thirsty during the day.

At night before going to bed: Another option is to take a portion in the evening, then top up with a smaller amount at Suhoor.

Iftar meal: If you feel really unwell by the end of your fasting period, you can also take some electrolytes with your Iftar meal to help you recover faster.

Golden Rule: Start Small and Build Up Gradually

There is one recommendation that applies equally to all types of fasting, and especially so if you are new to fasting or new to supplementing your fast with electrolytes.

Start with a low dosage of electrolytes and increase it gradually based on how you feel.

The logic is simple. If the dosage is too low, you can always take more a bit later.

But if it’s too high, there is little you can do to correct it. In the extreme cases, your body might even choose to expel the excess via diarrhoea or vomiting.

Keep it simple. Build up slowly and let your body guide you.

Conclusion

Electrolytes are not just about how much you take. Timing plays a key role in how your fast feels day to day.

Get it right, and your energy stays stable and your fast feels much easier.

Get it wrong and you may end up dealing with avoidable fatigue, cravings or discomfort.

Start with the right dosage. Spread it out where needed. Adjust based on how you feel.
