Fasting and Libido - What Happens to Your Sex Drive?

Fasting and Libido - What Happens to Your Sex Drive?

Fasting and Libido - What Happens to Your Sex Drive?

We talk about hunger, energy, blood sugar, and fat burning during a Fast. But there’s another question people may be a little less comfortable asking. What happens to your sex drive?

The answer isn’t as simple as saying Fasting raises or lowers libido. Your sex drive is affected by things like hormones, energy levels, stress, sleep, body image, and relationships. But Fasting does play a role in many of those factors.

What happens to libido during a Fast?

It wouldn’t be unusual to notice a temporary drop in libido during a Fast, particularly a longer one, or if you’re new to Fasting.

Think about what your body is dealing with. You’re not eating. You may be hungry, more tired than usual, sleeping differently, or adjusting to changes in blood sugar and energy availability. If you’re struggling already, sex may simply not be at the top of your priority list.

That doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong.

Your body is constantly deciding where to put its resources. During a short period without food, some of the hormonal signals involved in reproduction and sexual function may temporarily change.

On the other hand, not everyone experiences a drop in libido. Some people feel energetic and mentally sharp while Fasting and may notice little difference in their sex drive. Others may even notice an increase.

Bodies are complicated like that.

It’s about more than testosterone

When we talk about libido, testosterone tends to get most of the attention. But there’s a much bigger hormonal picture.

Testosterone and estrogen matter, but so do hormones and signaling systems involving things like leptin, cortisol, thyroid function, and the reproductive system. Fasting can have an impact on these signals, especially as the Fast becomes longer. But a temporary hormonal change during a Fast is not the same thing as permanently damaging your hormones, and that matters.

Can too much Fasting lower libido?

Occasionally going without food is very different from keeping your body in a constant state of under-fueling. Inadequate nutrition between frequent Extended Fasts, intense exercise, or extremely low body fat can put the body into an energy conserving state. Reproductive function is one area that can be affected.

A consistently low sex drive combined with symptoms such as fatigue, menstrual changes, poor sleep, or feeling unusually cold deserves attention.

In that situation, the problem may not be Fasting itself. It may be that the body simply isn’t getting enough energy or nutrients when food is available.

What about libido long term?

The interesting thing is that for someone who is overweight or struggling with poor metabolic health, losing excess body fat and improving overall health may have positive effects on sexual health.

And hormones aren’t the only reason.

Maybe you have more energy. Maybe moving around is easier, or you’re sleeping better. Maybe you simply feel better physically. And then there’s body image, which is so important when we talk about libido.

Feeling good about your body matters

Sexual desire doesn’t happen in a laboratory. How you feel about your body can affect how comfortable you feel being touched, being seen, and being intimate with someone else. And of course past trauma or negative experiences can have an affect on how you feel about sex, but that’s another discussion.

For some people, losing weight and becoming healthier can improve confidence. That alone may positively affect libido.

But there’s another side to this. If Fasting turns into constant restriction, anxiety about food, or an obsession with getting thinner, body image may become worse. That’s why the goal shouldn’t simply be to Fast more. It should be to use Fasting as a tool in a safe and smart way.

Changes in libido can be normal during a Fast

Fasting can change libido. Sex drive can temporarily decrease, or it can even increase. There’s no one answer for every individual. The key is to Fast safely, supplement your electrolytes so you feel the best you can during your Fast, and always fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods between Fasts.
