The sardine fast has been making the rounds lately. In almost all the Carnivore, Keto, or Fasting communities you’ll see photos of stacked cans of sardines, along with weight loss testimonials. It seems to be a very popular and simple way to reset and shed some pounds.
So, what exactly is a sardine fast, and is it worth trying?
What is a sardine fast?
Despite the name, a sardine fast isn’t really a fast at all, not like a water fast. Because the purpose of a water fast is to lower insulin so that you can burn fat. Sardines will still create insulin spikes because they are protein, just not as much as carbohydrates would.
A sardine fast is simply eating nothing but sardines, up to seven days, but most people are doing 3-5 days. You can drink water, unsweetened tea, or coffee, and of course electrolytes.
The idea seems to have originated as a way to break through a weight loss plateau while staying low-carb.
Why do people try it?
Sardines are surprisingly nutritious. They are packed with protein, healthy fats, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and B12, selenium, and also calcium if you eat the soft bones. As a single food, sardines are a powerhouse.
They’re also incredibly filling.
Unlike processed foods and snacks (even the Keto versions), sardines don’t encourage mindless eating. In fact, most people discover they get tired of them after a couple of days. The lack of variety can naturally reduce how much food you eat without needing to count calories.
For many people, that’s the real benefit.
Another advantage is simplicity. Instead of wondering what to cook or whether a food is keto-friendly, every meal is already decided.
What are the benefits of a sardine fast?
For someone already eating Keto or Carnivore, a sardine fast may offer a few useful benefits.
The high protein content helps support muscle while losing fat. The healthy fats provide steady energy, and the omega-3s may help reduce inflammation.
Many people also find it helps break cravings. If you’re started relying on Keto desserts, protein bars, or processed low-carb snacks, eating plain sardines for a few days can reset your taste buds and make whole foods appealing again.
It may also lead to weight loss, or help jump start a weight-loss plateau, although that’s probably because people naturally eat less, not because sardines have some magical fat-burning power.
Are there any downsides to a sardine fast?
Like any restrictive diet, a sardine fast has limitations.
While sardines are nutrient-dense, they aren’t a forever food. A healthy Keto or Carnivore diet still benefits from a variety over the long term.
And then there’s the taste. And the smell. Some people have a hard time with that, and it might make it harder to stick with.
If you’re not already Keto or Carnivore, jumping from a diet high in carbohydrates into a sardine fast will be even more challenging because you’re also going to be dealing with your body switching from burning glucose to burning fat. In that case, it might be smarter to at least go very low-carb first, and then after you’ve adapted to that you could try a sardine fast.
You’ll also want to check your labels. Some sardines are packed in seed oils, which you do not want. Look for sardines packed in extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or water.
If you have metabolic conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease, or you’re on any medications, you should check in with your doctor to see if a sardine fast is safe for you.
Can you combine a sardine fast with Intermittent Fasting?
Absolutely.
Many people naturally pair a sardine fast with Intermittent Fasting. For example, you might eat two sardine meals during a six or eight hour eating window and water fast for the remaining hours of the day.
Because sardines are rich in both protein and fat, many people find they stay full longer, making fasting feel easier. Just remember to stay hydrated, and keep up with your electrolytes.
Is it worth trying?
At the end of the day, the sardine fast isn’t really about the sardines. It’s about getting back to the basics and doing a simple reset.
Like many nutrition trends, a sardine fast has some solid ideas behind it, but it’s not a magic solution. It can be a powerful, short-term tool. The important thing is what comes afterwards. Once the reset is over, return to a balanced Keto or Carnivore way of eating, with plenty of whole, nutrient-dense foods.
