How to Take Fasting Salts Powder

Our Fasting Salts powder is a blend of pure mineral salts with no flavourings or sweeteners.

Purity is important because the last thing you need while fasting is chemical junk. But it also means the taste is very salty! Essentially just like any other pure salt.

Here are some tips on how to take Fasting Salts and ensure optimal electrolyte balance throughout your fast.

Watch the video below on YouTube or read on for the text version.

Basic method: Mix Fasting Salts with plain water

The simplest way to take Fasting Salts is to mix powder with plain water, and dilute to the point where the taste is manageable.

How much water do you need for mixing?

We recommend mixing 1 scoop (5g) with 500ml of water. 1 scoop is roughly equivalent to 1 teaspoon.

If your recommended single serving is half a scoop (2.5g), then start with 250ml of water.

This is a guideline only that's not set in stone. You can increase the amount of water if the salty taste is too strong.

The dilution ratio doesn't affect the efficacy of the salts. As long as you consume your whole recommended dosage of electrolytes, it doesn't matter how much water it takes for you to do so.

One word of caution: it is sometimes possible to drink too much water during fasting which may lead to faster electrolyte depletion.

Drinking it all at once vs sipping gradually

Drinking electrolyte water gradually over time is better from an absorption viewpoint, especially for Extended Fasting.

Many people put the salts and water into a water bottle and then sip it gradually throughout the day. This creates a constant gradual replenishment which is easy for your body to absorb and minimises the chances of digestive upset.

However, not everyone can tolerate the constant salty taste. If that's you, then take your whole dosage at once and then switch back to plain water for hydration.

Sparkling water and small dash of lemon, lime or ACV

Some of our customers prefer using sparkling water instead of plain.

Always make sure it's plain mineral or carbonated water without any added flavourings or sweeteners.

When you add the salts to sparkling water, it will briefly fizz up as the salt crystals react with carbon dioxide in the water. This is perfectly normal and will not affect the efficacy of the salts.

If you like, you can also add a small dash of lemon or lime juice or apple cider vinegar. Their calorie content is about 1 calorie per teaspoon which will not break your fast or affect autophagy.

Warm water option

Another option to try is mixing the salts with warm water rather than cold or room temperature.

On Extended Fasting, this change can add a bit of variety. Some people even say it makes them feel like they are drinking broth or soup.

One point to note, please make sure to use warm water rather than hot or boiling. Hot temperatures can affect the efficacy of potassium.

Radical method: Salts shot

This last method is definitely not for everyone! Only try this if none of the above ways work for you.

Some of our customers prefer taking the powder but really dislike the salty taste. So they go for the radical option of getting it over and done with as quickly as possible.

The salts shot method is mixing salt with a small amount of water (50–100ml or so). And then swigging it quickly, like vodka or tequila! Followed immediately by a glass of plain water.

This last point is crucial.  Please do not try the salts shot without the follow-up water. On its own, the salts shot almost guarantees digestive upset and possible vomiting.

Fasting Salts Capsules are also an option

If you really can't bear the salty taste, and none of the tips above help, consider getting Fasting Salts capsules instead.

The capsules deliver the same essential fasting electrolytes in the right ratios, are flavourless and easy to take.
